The line up of games for the Nintendo Switch has been considered by some to be pretty lacklustre due to its lack of AAA releases. However, during a Reddit AMA with Jeff Kaplan of Blizzard Entertainment (Vice President and Game Director), we may have had a hint that a version of Overwatch is a possibility for Nintendo’s newest console.
When asked about the Nintendo Switch, Kaplan replied “I’m loving the Switch! My second favorite gaming platform of all time is the 3DS. Getting OW on the Switch is very challenging for us. But we’re always open minded about exploring possible platforms.”
Whilst this neither confirms or denies there being a port in the works, it does give some hope for fans of the game who want a reason to buy a Switch, or people who already own a Switch and are looking for more games to play. This would definitely be a good move for Blizzard, however a challenging one also.
Overmatch requires an internet connection to work but a big selling point of the Switch is its portability. So while the game would work perfectly well in an environment where it can connect to a Wi-Fi signal, it would be useless when out and about. This means it could either be released as is or, Blizzard could work on some new features for the game. If they were to include a type of offline mode or LAN play between local Switch consoles, I think Blizzard and Nintendo will both be on to a winner there.
One can only dream.
